Noontime Knowledge - Lunch Panel Sharing Teacher Success

Description:

During lunch we will feature a panel of classroom teachers, P.E. specialists, and other staff who have successfully implemented movement in their classes, schools, and playgrounds. Listen and ask questions to bring strategies and tricks back to your own schools.

Presenters:

Jeri Holowka
Jerri has been teaching 5th grade for the past eight years in Morgan, UT. She is currently attending Weber State University in the summer time in order to complete a second bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion, and will complete her degree this summer. Jerri enjoys cooking and baking her family’s food, and finds ways to make them full of nutrients. As an avid runner and exerciser, Jerri has always found it important to bring her ideas of health and exercise into the classroom.

Joyce Sanders
Joyce teaches elementary PE at three different elementary schools in the Washington County School District:  Hurricane Elementary, LaVerkin Elementary, and Three Falls Elementary. Joyce is married and a mother of four children. In Jr. High and high school Joyce competed in gymnastics and won state in the all-around competition. Later she coached and taught gymnastics at Provo High School during her last two years of college at Brigham Young University.
Joyce graduated from BYU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreational Management, and later received another Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Physical Education and Dance from SUSC (now Southern Utah University).
Her current job is quite unique in that each hour of the day she teaches an entire grade rather than a single classroom. This means she can have up to 100 plus students at one time. Her largest class this year is 125 fifth graders and her smallest class is 75 first graders. She usually goes through between 600 to 650 students in one day. Though it is very challenging and somewhat exhausting, Joyce has learned a lot about managing large classes.

Diana Sciandra
Diana is a Certified Holistic Health Coach (INHC), Certified Kids Yoga Instructor, Certified Mindfulness Educator and a USASA Certified Snowboard and Skateboard Coach.  Diana has been actively working in schools k-12 for five years. She teaches nutrition classes, mindful movement, PE, mindfulness and SEL in schools. She also works with elite professional athletes and sports teams all over the world in Holistic Health and Mindful Sports Performance.

She provides workshops and presentations throughout the year at Natural Grocers, privately and at other schools in the area. When she is not working she loves to snowboard, skateboard, practice yoga and mindfulness, paddle board, cook, hike and be with her family!

Sunshine Szedeli
My name is Sunshine, I am the P.E. Specialist at Viewmont Elementary in Murray School District.  I have been coaching at Viewmont for 5 years.  When I arrived, the school did not have a P.E. program in place and teachers had been teaching P.E. for years leading up to my joining the faculty.  I coach grades K thru 6th 3 days a week for 40 minutes per class.  Because there are no set lesson plans, I design and implement the core curriculum with a lot of room for poetic license and creativity.  My favorite part of my job is the kids.  I am fortunate to work in a school full of active enthusiastic youngsters.  Over the years, they have grown to trust me and themselves when it comes to finding the physical activity/level that suits their needs.  They have also learned my style of discipline and my ways of keeping order.  We have worked a great deal on being mindful this year, and I have been pleasantly surprised at the results.  In my personal time I enjoy being outside, I am a runner, rucker, cyclist, hiker, walker.  I love working with anything "bell" in the name (i.e. barbell, kettle bell, dumb bell), and am a huge advocate for the benefits of physical and mental health awareness.
